Parent Guide
Everything you can do as a Parent on DoCurious — managing your children's accounts and participating yourself.
What You Can Do
As a linked parent or guardian, you have oversight access to your children's accounts and full personal access to the platform for yourself:
- Monitor child activity — see your child's profile, Bucket List, Track Records, communities, and completions
- Gift challenges — purchase challenges externally and deliver them through the platform
- Approve or decline gifts — review challenges gifted to your child by others (required for under-13)
- Manage community access — remove your child from friend communities
- Communicate with school — contact teachers and school admins via structured forms
- Control data and privacy — request data exports, initiate account deletion, and revoke consent for under-13 children
- Do your own challenges — build your own Bucket List, complete challenges, earn XP and badges, and join communities independently
You cannot post as your child, edit their content, or complete challenges on their behalf. Parent access is oversight only.
Getting Started
Parents are linked to children's accounts through one of two paths:
School-initiated (most common):
- A school creates your child's account and sends you an invitation email
- Click the link in the email — you arrive at DoCurious
- Create your own account (or log in if you already have one)
- You see a screen listing your children: "You've been invited to link to [Child Name]." If multiple children attend the school, they are all listed with individual approve buttons or a single "Approve All" option
- Approve the link. Your child's account upgrades from Tier 1 (school-only) to Tier 2 (full access)
- You are prompted to invite a second parent or guardian if applicable
Parent-initiated:
- Create a DoCurious account and navigate to "Add Child" from your dashboard
- If your child already has a school-created account, enter their school email or a linking code
- A connection request is sent — the school confirms for under-13 children, or the child confirms if 13+
COPPA consent for under-13 children is verified through a one-time $1.00 credit card charge per child link. This is the FTC-accepted mechanism for verifiable parental consent.
A child can have up to 2 linked parent or guardian accounts. Both parents have identical permissions and visibility. The first linked parent or the school can invite a second parent via email.
For full details on linking and consent, see Accounts & Authentication.
Your Dashboard
The parent dashboard is your primary interface for monitoring your children's DoCurious activity. If you have multiple linked children, a dropdown at the top ("Viewing: [Child Name]") switches between them, updating all dashboard content.
Child Activity Summary — an overview card showing last login, current streak, level and XP progress, challenges completed this month, and all-time totals.
Recent Track Records — the 3-5 most recent entries from your child with challenge name, media type, date, and verification status (Pending, Approved, or Needs Revision). Click any entry to view the full record.
Challenges Overview — in-progress challenges, recently completed challenges, Bucket List count, and school assignment status (if school-linked).
School Info Card — if your child is linked to a school: school name, teacher name(s), assignment completion counts, and any teacher feedback flagged for your attention. Includes a "Contact School" link.
Gift and Purchase Section — "Gift a Challenge" button, recent gifts you have sent with status, and any purchase requests from your child.
Pending Approvals — items requiring your action: gifts to your child from others, community join requests (under-13), and account linking requests. Each item has Approve and Decline buttons. Empty state: "Nothing needs your attention right now."
Side navigation includes: Dashboard, [Child Name]'s Activity, Track Records, Communities (view-only), Gift a Challenge, Settings, and Add Child.
Key Features
Child Account Management
Your access to your child's account is purely oversight. You can view everything — profile, Bucket List, Track Records, communities, activity — but you cannot act as your child within the platform.
Consent controls for under-13 children:
- Grant consent — linking to your child's account constitutes consent, upgrading them from Tier 1 to Tier 2
- Revoke consent — from your account settings, select "Revoke consent for [Child Name]." The child's account immediately reverts to Tier 1 (school-only) or enters a view-only state. Existing content is preserved but sharing is disabled. You can re-grant consent at any time
- Request data export — download a complete archive of your child's data (delivered within 48 hours)
- Initiate account deletion — only you (not the child) can delete an under-13 account. COPPA requires this to be processed within 48 hours
When your child turns 13, their linkage status does not change automatically. They gain a "Manage Parent Link" setting and can modify or sever the link at their discretion. DoCurious does not push them to do either.
For details, see Accounts & Authentication.
School Connection
If your child is linked to a school, the School Info card on your dashboard gives you visibility into assignments, grades, and teacher feedback. You can contact the school through a structured "Contact School" form — DoCurious has no direct messaging. Teachers provide feedback through private comments on Track Records.
For more on how schools work, see School Administration.
Gifting
Parents can gift paid challenges to their children. The flow works like this:
- Navigate to "Gift a Challenge" from your dashboard or find a paid challenge through Explore
- Click "Gift This Challenge" — you are redirected to the vendor's website to complete the purchase
- Return to DoCurious and fill in the gifting screen: recipient (your child), a personal message, and any claiming information
- Your child receives the gift in their Invitations tab
You can also approve or decline gifts sent to your under-13 child by others. These appear in your Pending Approvals section.
For the complete gifting system, see Gifting & Invitations.
Communities
You can view your child's community memberships from the parent dashboard (read-only). For under-13 children, you have the ability to remove your child from friend communities (Family, Trusted Friends, Casual Friends). You cannot remove them from school communities — those are managed by the School Admin.
As a parent, you can also create and join your own communities independently. Family-type communities default to private, invite-only spaces where members can gift challenges to each other.
For more, see Communities & Social.
Your Own Challenges
Your parent account is also a full personal account. You can browse and discover challenges, build your own Bucket List, complete challenges with Track Records, earn XP and badges, join communities, and use Dealer's Choice — all independently of your children's accounts. If you have multiple roles, the context switcher in the header lets you move between them.

Multi-Child Management
If you have multiple children on DoCurious, you manage them all from a single parent account:
- Child selector — the dropdown at the top of your dashboard ("Viewing: [Child Name]") switches between children, updating all dashboard content
- Batch linking — during the initial linking flow, you can approve connections for multiple children in one session using "Approve All"
- Add Child later — your dashboard includes an "Add Child" button to link additional children at any time
- Independent consent — consent is granted and revoked per child, not as a blanket setting
- Per-child visibility — each child's data, activity, and pending approvals are displayed independently
Both linked parents see identical information and have identical permissions for each shared child.
